Macufe Is Around The Corner!! #Hauweng!!!!

Macufe’s enormous contribution to Mangaung, Free State and South Africa’s economy successfully repeat itself year after year.

“FULLY BOOKED” signboards are put up by many of Mangaung’s hotels and B&B establishments during two weeks in October. Also restaurants, formal and informal traders, supermarkets, filling stations and many more leisure and retail establishments experience a boom in business each year that throngs of cultural tourists embark on an annual pilgrimage to Macufe. Employment opportunities are created for artists, various skilled and menial laborers while small-medium enterprises – including equipment hire companies- also get a much needed business boost.

This year’s Hip Hop Show, themed TSHEPE taking place on the 4th of October at the Workshop Theatre in Pacofs was created based on Sesotho hip- hop vs. Motswako (Setswana hip hop). Representing the Sesotho hip-hop are Kommanda Obbs, D2amajoe, Baleloko, Maths, Papa Zee, Moshoeshoe, Kulax, and representing Motswako are Tuks, Molemi, Notshi, Casper Nyovest. Other hip- hop DJ’s such as Naked DJ, DJ Shaxes, DJ Dimples and DJ Email have also been invited. Tickets to this show cost only R50.

As one of the nation’s major cultural attractions, Macufe strives to promote social cohesion with its events that are representative of the Rainbow nation. One festival that reflects the spirit of unity in diversity is the Macufe Rocks event to be staged on October 5th at Old Greys Sports Ground. It’s bound to rock everyone’s socks off with an impressive and inclusive line-up that includes Zebra & Giraffe, The Muffins, Locnville, AKA, Big FKN Gun, Good Luck, Oros in n Lang Glas, Tailor, Jeremy Loops and Gangs of Ballet. Tickets to this show cost only R150.

Having supported Justin Bieber on his South African tour, Locnville who have over nearly three hundred thousand likes on facebook are clearly one of the most exciting, entertaining and supported South African pop acts. The double Sama winning electro hop music duo is made up of identical twin brothers Andrew and Brian Chaplin who are related to the late silent movie icon Charlie Chaplin. Locnville is expected to perform songs from their new studio album titled One Night Only due for release in September.

Ticket bookings (at R150 each) are also open for the spiritually driven Macufe Gospel Concert. Taking place on October 6th at The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground; the concert is headlined by S’fiso Ncwane who’s also been winning fans in churches of a different kind (night clubs and taverns) with his hit song Kulingile Baba. Joining Ncwane at the gospel event are Rebecca Malope, Solly Mahlangu, Sipho Makhabane, Sechaba, Khanyiswa, Umsingizane, Tshepo Komane, Teboho and Friends, Dumako Nkosi and Sello Malete.

THE annual Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) successfully strives to present a diverse cultural and artistic offering each year.

Thus it is expected and is only natural for an internationally acclaimed musical stage play of Umoja’s caliber to headline the theatre production side of the massive national event that is proudly hosted by the Free State province. The pulsating South African cultural heritage production is bound to set the stage ablaze, just as it has done all over the globe, with lively choreography, compelling (sometimes sad) humour and proudly South African music with the edge, groove and deeply rooted motherland soul.

Penuel Bhekizitha Ndaba eloquently narrates in a deep, warm, full of life and captivating voice that transports the audience down memory lane to the horrendous days of apartheid. He impresses even more with a hopeful tone when he brings his audience to the recent tumultuous and euphoric days of the dawn of democracy that had among others kwaito music as its popular soundtrack.

“Umoja is more about showcasing the history of South African music so that we, especially the youth, don’t forget who we are and where we come from,” says 21 year-old Nondumiso Madlala, one of Umoja’s lead singers and dancers. “The cast is made-up of old and new members, the production has been updated but still keeps most of its original storyline intact,” says the young star whose sister was once part of Umoja. Scheduled performances for Umoja-The Spirit of Togetherness, at R20 per show, are on from October 7th to the 11th at the Civic Theatre in Bloemfontein.

One other play that will have Macufe patrons on the edge of their seats is The Plot. The Danny Moleko and Wits Lesenyeho’s production can be described as a stage crime-thriller with an intricate plot. The collaborative work with twists, turns and swerves involves a number of horrendous deaths in a prominent and wealthy family. “Generally sections of the play are influenced by real situations. When one reads the newspapers or listens to the news, we come across numerous situations where prominent businessmen are killed by greedy relatives hoping to inherit their wealth,” says Moleko who is also the director for The Plot. “These (the stories) in many ways influenced the decision to write the play. Also an old friend and colleague, Dr Nathan Bagarette once challenged me to write a script around this topic. So, he was also a great inspiration for me in writing this story.”

The Plot has scenes about murders that are believed to been mapped out and executed from within top businessman Thabo Moloi’s family hence the arrest of his son Sello. “There are two lessons here,” continues Moleko “One is definitely that crime does not pay while the other is that your dark secrets always have a way of coming back to haunt you.”

Breathing life into the story of The Plot are Moagi Modise (Thabo Moloi), Tinah Mnumzana (Aus Mary), Setshoana Chabeli (Jackie Moloi), Hamilton ‘Cappuccino’ Peterson (Phuti Alexandra), Lebohang Banyane (Inspector Mbilo), Thembisile Nogwanya (Barman) and Mlungisi Wetsworth Tshobeka (Sello Moloi).

THE PLOT will be staged at the Andre’  Hugeunot theatre at PACOFS from the 7-11 October at 19h30. Tickets cost only R50.00

A few days after the spiritually driven music had soothed, comforted and brought hope it will be time for another artistic healing. Laughter will certainly be the best medication administered on Wednesday, October 9th at the Macufe Comedy. Nothing less can be expected when the MC is the seasoned David Kau.

Coming from across the borders is Nigeria’s Bright ‘Basketmouth’ Okpocha who once labeled comedians in his home country as having become lazy and sterile in their jokes. The West African will be expected to present some refreshing material and nothing recycled. After all Onlinenigeria describes his comedy as “ witty retorts and rib-cracking jokes.”

Kau will also be introducing some of the best-known names in Mzansi comedy including Mashabela Galane, Issac Gampu, Tumi Morake, Conrad Koch Chester Missing, Skhumba Hlophe, Celeste Ntuli and Sifiso Nene.

Another Macufe first highlight this year is The Macufe Traditional Fashion Show which show case the work of the exhibitors. as well as to use a different platform. Patrons can expect a mixture of traditional clothing paired up with traditional handmade jewellery and other accessories. Also on display will be hand- made bags, clothing and hand shoes. The dates for the fashion shows is 9 and 11 October at Macufe Arts and Culture Village between 15h00 and 16h00 on both days admission is free.

Other major Macufe attractions not to be missed include Macufe’s Indoor Jazz that will feature Victor, Anthony Hamilton, Hugh Masekela, Judith Sephuma from 7pm on October 10 at The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground. The same venue hosts Keri Hilson, Zonke, Thandiswa Mazwai, and Maleh in the Divas Concert on October 11. Entrance to each of the concerts at the Dome is R220.

Wrapping up the arts and cultural side of Macufe is the Main Music Festival on October 12 at Rose Gardens. The game of football closes the annual fiesta with the Macufe Cup on October 13th.
