Zurich Begins Experiment With Drive-In ‘Sex Boxes’

No car, No sex!!!

That’s the rule for an experiment Zurich is launching Monday to make prostitution less of a public nuisance and safer for women. Switzerland has long been famous for its mountaineering, chocolate and precision watches, but a lesser known aspect is its legal prostitution since 1942, for which its largest city is one of the main centers in Europe.

Fashionably teak-colored open wooden garages, popularly called “sex boxes” by the Swiss media, will be open for business for drive-in customers. The several dozen sex workers who are expected to make it their new hub will stand along a short road in a small, circular park for clients to choose from and negotiate with. The park was built in a former industrial area nestled between a rail yard and the fence along a major highway.

The publicly funded facilities — open all night and located away from the city center — include bathrooms, lockers, small cafe tables and a laundry and shower. Men won’t have to worry about video surveillance cameras, but the sex workers — who will need a permit and pay a small tax — will be provided with a panic button and on-site social workers trained to look after them.

Voters in Zurich approved spending up to 2.4 million Swiss francs ($2.6 million) on the project last year as a way of relocating the sex traffic away from a busy downtown area where it had become a public nuisance and safety concern due to lack of sanitation, aggressive men, and associated drugs and violence. The city, which only allows prostitution in certain areas, also plans to spend 700,000 francs ($760,000) a year to keep the sex boxes running.

Jean-Marc Hensch, a business executive who heads a neighborhood association in another part of Zurich, said he hopes the sex boxes succeed because otherwise the prostitutes might return to his area. He also cited the disgusting lack of sanitation in other city areas where prostitutes and their clients defecate and urinate in the streets and gardens, or have sex in the open because they have nowhere else to go.

“It’s an experiment,” he said. “It was absolutely urgent to find a solution.”

The drive-in garages, or sheds, have no doors to shut and come equipped with an emergency call button on the passenger side of the structure that sets off a flashing light and a loud alarm inside an adjacent office building where the city will post social workers specially trained to provide a measure of security.

The Zurich police say they will beef up patrols around the perimeter to protect the sex workers when they leave and enter.

Modeled after the drive-in brothels used in several cities in Germany and the Netherlands, which have had mixed success improving safety, the sex boxes will be open daily from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. The city painted the outdoor bathrooms in soft pink and blue, strung colorful light bulbs among the trees and posted creative signs encouraging the use of condoms to spruce the place up a little and make it seem more pleasant.

Zurich requires that street sex workers register with city and health authorities, and it offers health checks and requires that sex workers be at least 18 years old, in keeping with a Council of Europe convention on protecting children from exploitation and abuse.

In Switzerland, anyone who works in the sex trade must be at least 16, the legal age of sexual maturity. The income is taxed and subject to social insurance like any other economic activity. But some cities have their own rules and some of the 26 Swiss cantons (states) have adopted separate legislation on prostitution. A special unit of the cantonal police force, usually the vice squad, carries out inspections of prostitutes in red light areas.

No video surveillance was installed at the sex boxes, so as not to scare off business, but also because police and city officials concluded after studying the handful of other such facilities in Europe that the only thing that would improve safety is an on-site security presence. To use the place, sex workers also must obtain a special permit, at a cost of 40 Swiss francs ($43) a year, and pay 5 francs ($5.40) a night in taxes, which helps the city offset maintenance costs. – ZURIC (AP)

Kenny Kunene Quits EFF Leadership

Johannesburg – Businessman Kenny Kunene has quit his leadership positions in the newly-formed Economic Freedom Front with immediate effect, it was reported on Wednesday.

Kunene told The Star newspaper that he was resigning from his position on the central command team as well as his role as the head of campaigns, mobilisation and special projects, after “considering a lot of things”.

He added that there were still decisions to be made on the way forward.

“Obviously I’d like to see economic freedom being realised and I will remain an economic freedom fighter for ordinary people. The direction I am taking from now will determine if I will still be active in EFF,” he told The Star.

Kunene, known as the “Sushi King”, was seen as a crowd-pulling asset for former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema’s new political party.

He said Malema had “accepted and respected” his resignation, and that be still believed the party has a future “even when I am not there”. – News24

SHOCKING: 94 000 Schoolgirls Listed As Pregnant!

SOUTH Africa’s schoolgirls are experimenting with unprotected sex, sugar daddies, drugs and alcohol.

And that is why an estimated 94000 schoolgirls are pregnant across the country.

Just over 1600 pregnancies were reported at Mpumalanga schools in the whole of 2012, but already by May this year, 1564 pupils in the same province were pregnant.

As for Gauteng, a recent study conducted by Lindi Molele of Fatlhohang Sechaba, among 500 pupils aged from 13 and 18, showed that about 80 matric pupils in three Ivory Park schools were pregnant!

Molele said about 40 girls were pregnant at Mqele Secondary, 20 at Ivory Park Secondary and another 20 at Eqinisweni Secondary.

“The number could be higher, as there were pregnant pupils in lower grades who were not counted,” she said.

Molele gave those statistics to representatives from Gauteng’s Department of Health and Social Development at an event that was organised for the pregnant girls.

Gauteng education spokesman Gershwin Chuenyane said the department held a summit on teenage pregnancy last year at which they sought expert advice on these matters. – Daily Sun

Introducing Vusi Nova!!

(PIC) New vocal sensation, Vusi Nova

(PIC) New vocal sensation, Vusi Nova

Stand up and recognize, Mzansi – there is a new talent in the ring. With auto-tune and all these new inventions that recording companies have come up with to sell us garbage and call it music, it is so refreshing that once in a while a true talent will get a platform to shine and remind us again that there are talented musicians on this planet. One such talent is Vusi Nova.

Real name, Vusi Nongxo, this Eastern Cape musician is as refreshing as he is endearing. He is the full package – the voice, the swag and the stage presence. Great combination if you are going to start off your new career by taking on giants like Etta James and Beyonce.

I first heard (and saw) Vusi’s new single, which is a remake of Etta James’s famous blues song I’d Rather Be Blind, on one of those random intermissions of SABC 3. I immediately went on Facebook and shared my appreciation.

The song was first recorded by James in 1967, released in 1968 and has since been re-recorded by countless singers. More recently and possibly famous is the 2008 Beyonce version on the movie Cardillac Records’ soundtrack.

That alone tells you how bold this new South African artist is. Looking at Vusi’s history you will understand why he needed to take a big risk to get noticed because thus far he was just hovering in the shadows.

No stranger to the music in industry, Nova has worked with the likes of Kelly Khumalo, Ringo and MXO.

In 2009 he released an album called Ndimfumene which barely made a blib in the market.

In 2010 he joined forces with the Kwela Tebza trio on their popular song “Ching Pow”. Subsequent to that there were stories of an album coming out.

The album never materialised or it did not do well enough for me to know about it.

In 2012, Kalawa Jazmee announced that they had signed Vusi, still going by his real surname Nongxo at the time, and he would be releasing a new song called Ntombenhle on which he features Zulu Boy. More talk of an album ensued but nothing came of it.

Few months later Vusi has broken out of the shadows and is ready to take his place in the spotlight. And dare I say it; South Africa DESERVES this! … pun very much intended. Competition breeds creativity afterall.

The ladies have been dominating the scene. Now you have 3 masssively talent vocalists, Donald Moatshe, Khaya Mthethwa and Vusi Nova, to give the ladies some competition.

Rebranded, with a new style and last name, Vusi Nova is now signed to Muthaland Entertainment and will be releasing his new album next week. If the I’d Rather Be Blind single is anything to go by that Mzansi is in for a treat.

I am delightfully honoured to introduce you to VUSI NOVA! – Phil Mphela
